The post weaning period is renowned for being problematic with piglets often experiencing diarrhoea and poor performance. Diarrhoea often is caused and/or exacerbated by the abrupt change in diet, poor digestive capacity and overarching stress caused by the rapid environmental changes experienced. In addition, young piglets have been found to produce very low levels of gastric enzymes compared to their adult counterparts. Poor nutrient degradation and subsequent uptake, leaves undigested nutrients in the intestinal tract, where they start to ferment, promoting bacterial growth and disrupting the gut microflora, ultimately leading to digestive disorders and diarrhoea. In addition to the health and welfare implications, the loss of performance can have a substantial effect on the productivity and profitability of production.
LYSOFORTE® EXTEND is a unique absorption enhancer containing a synergistic combination of lysophospholipids, monoglycerides and a synthetic emulsifier. Its scientifically proven combination of active ingredients significantly enhances the absorption of nutrients, including energy and amino acids, via improving all three individual stages of lipid digestion: emulsification, hydrolysis and absorption. By removing the fat matrix from the feed more efficiently, a nutrient absorption enhancer can also ensure that the full potential of endogenous and exogenous enzymes is realized, additionally supporting and optimal feed digestibility of e.g. proteins and fibre, resulting in optimal piglet performance.
Recently, in poultry, the use of LYSOFORTE EXTEND showed to significantly improve litter quality. It was therefore suggested that in pigs, this may improve the faecal consistency of weaned piglets. To assess the effect of LYSOFORTE EXTEND on weaned piglets, a scientific study was performed to determine its effect at two different doses on performance, faecal consistency, and nutrient digestibility.
The results of this study confirmed a nutrient absorption enhance can positively impact both performance and nutrient digestibility and furthermore, supplemented piglets had statistically significantly improved faecal consistency compared to non-supplemented piglets (Figure 1). In brief, the scoring scale ranged from 1 to 5 as follows: 1 = normal feces (hard dry pellet form); 2 = moist feces (firm, formed stool); 3 = mild (soft, moist stool that retains shape); 4 = severe (soft, unformed stool that assumes the shape of the container); 5 = watery (watery liquid that can be poured). Scoring was performed on a pen basis.
