Dr. Phil Cardoso, associate professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, earned his D.V.M. and M.S. degrees from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Since 2012, Cardoso has led a distinctive program integrating teaching, extension, and research. His Dairy Science program, notable for its impact on student placement in applied positions and academia, emphasizes the diet of dairy cows as a medical prescription to enhance performance, health, and reproduction. This approach is grounded in a deep understanding of nutrition's effects on metabolism, reproduction, and health in dairy cows, including how they adapt metabolically to stress and forage quality. Cardoso and his students have published over 90 peer-reviewed papers and 3 book chapters, contributing significantly to dairy science literature.

With degrees from Cornell and the University of Illinois, he has contributed over 90 peer-reviewed publications to the field. His accolades include the Cargill Animal Nutrition Young Scientist Award (2006), the ADSA Foundation Scholar Award (2007), and being named a Faculty Fellow at Cornell's Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future (2013).
