The importance of antioxidants on the new grain syndrome

When freshly harvested grain is fed to pigs it often results in problems with the productivity. When the grain is harvested many biological processes are still ongoing. These are mainly enzymatic reactions such as the activity of the lipoxygenase enzyme. Upon grinding of freshly harvested grain the enzymes are liberated and become active. The lipoxygenase enzyme promotes oxidative reactions. Stabilization of the feed with an additional amount of antioxidants is able to overcome the negative aspects associated with feeding animals freshly harvested grain.
