How to get more out of your feed?

By on 23 August 2019

Cost management is an art and a challenge in the industry. The key question? That is: how to enhance animal performance, product quality and profitability at the same time. And your competitivity, of course, whether you are an integrator or a feed mill. How to get more out of your feed? Get inspired by the insights from three large-scale field trials.

Trial 1: Broiler performance and profitability

Advances in selective breeding, production technologies and management practices have enabled the industry to grow broilers much more efficiently. Over the last decades, the growth rate and feed efficiency have progressed drastically. Broilers have become real growth champions. Much depends on giving young broilers a head start and supporting their fast development ‘from hatch to dispatch’.

How does a feed additive that enhances nutrient absorption contribute to that effect?

We put it to the test during a 34 days’ field trial with 168.000 chickens (Ross 308) of the commercial broiler farm of a large European integration. LYSOFORTE® EXTEND dry was applied ‘on top’ with a dosage of 500g per ton of feed, a standard diet based on wheat, corn and soybean meal.

The results

-  Better average body weight: +70 g after 34 days, by supporting the nutrient digestibility. This performance benefit is - already present in the first week of age;
-  Improved Food Conversion Ratio (+ 7 points)
-  Better gut health and lower mortality;
-  Higher European Poultry Efficiency Factor;
-  Calculated extra income (LYSOFORTE cost incl.): 5 eurocents/bird. ROI = x 8;
-  More than 8.000 € extra profit over the trial period.

In other words:
by adding the nutritional tool ‘on top’ of the existing formulation you can improve the performance of the broilers and the feed conversion ratio from day one. It boosts their gut health and prevents losses by mortality. The production becomes more efficient. Last but not least: it generates a considerable production profit.

Trial 2: Layer performance and egg profit

How to boost egg production and improve the quality and size? Fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamin E, are key for the solution. Also the absorption of important fatty acids, such as linoleic acid, is crucial. To measure the impact of a nutritional tool enhancing nutrient absorption on laying performance and egg sizes, we conducted a large field trial in Spain. 360.000 laying hens with an average age of 47,5 weeks were assigned to 2 treatments that were replicated 3 times (60.000 hens per replicate) with 3 different brown genetics (Lohman, HN and Novogen).

The trial lasted 7 weeks, with a 3-week pre-experimental period. The performance of 180.000 birds receiving the standard diet and 180.000 birds receiving LYSOFORTE EXTEND dry, 500 g per ton of feed on top were compared. In total, 15,3 million eggs were produced by the second group over the trial period. This group did remarkably better than the first.

layer performance and egg profit

The results

  • Improved Feed Conversion Ratio: more egg weight per kg of feed

            = + € 2314 extra profit;

  • More average egg weight and attractive yolk colour improved the commercial classification of the eggs = + € 7.144 extra profit
  • Total for trial period with 180.000 laying hens for 7 weeks:

= + € 9.458 extra profit;

            ROI = x 3,67

In other words: with a dietary supplementation of LYSOFORTE EXTEND you can improve the feed conversion ratio (more egg per kg of feed), produce bigger eggs with higher commercial value and increase yolk pigmentation. Overall, the extra profit per laying hen is considerable.

This is only a brief summary of the results. Read all the details in the technical sheet .

Trials 3: Increasing profits in lactating sows and piglets

For lactating sows, the feed intake is often insufficient to cover their nutrient requirements. This negative energy balance has a direct impact on the performance of the sow and her piglets. How to solve this problem? Previous studies have already shown that lysophospholipid-based nutritional instruments improve nutrient absorption of the sow. In that way, they compensate for the lack of nutrients/energy.

How consistent is this effect and how big its impact? We put it to the test in seven separate experiments across the globe over the period 2007 - 2017. In total 230 sows participated. They received LYSOFORTE during the last three weeks of the gestation period (starting at day 90 of gestation) and throughout the lactation period till weaning. The dosage was 250 to 750 g per ton, on top of a standard diet.

What was the effect on sow and piglet performance?

Sow performance

  • Increased feed intake by 3% on average
  • Reduction of backfat loss due to better feed intake and nutrient absorption;
  • Better feed efficiency: 250g less feed needed per kg of piglet gain;

Piglet performance

  • Lower pre-weaning mortality;
  • Improved average daily weight gain by 11.2 g/day on average;
  • Average weaning weight 270 grams higher

            =  + 5,44 kg extra per litter at weaning;

  • more uniform piglet weight at weaning.

In other words: with LYSOFORTE applied on top of the standard diet you support the sow during gestation and lactation. Moreover, you boost the liveability, daily weight gain and uniform weight at weaning of her piglets.
